From Šabac to the World Cup: the rapid ascent of Jovo Lukić
In short: Born in Serbia but representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jovo Lukić has navigated a remarkable professional journey. From his debut at seventeen to scoring on the grandest stage of international football, his career serves as a testament to the nomadic and high-stakes nature of modern professional football.
Jovo Lukić's footballing trajectory began in the youth systems of Modriča and Sloga Doboj. He made his professional debut on 6 August 2016, playing against Sutjeska Foča at just 17 years old. Significant achievements defined his formative period, such as netting his initial professional goal on 19 November and recording a hat-trick versus Borac Šamac on 10 June 2017.
His club career has seen him move through various Balkan and Romanian sides. After stints with Sloga Doboj, Krupa, and a loan at Zvijezda Gradačac, he joined Borac Banja Luka in June 2020. By late 2024, Lukić had transitioned to the Romanian Liga I, first signing with Universitatea Craiova in September before moving to Universitatea Cluj in 2025.
On the international stage, Lukić progressed from the Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 squad under coach Vinko Marinović to the senior national team. He earned his first senior cap on 19 December 2021 during a friendly against the United States. His journey reached a pinnacle during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he scored his first international goal on 12 June in a group stage draw against Canada.
Despite his success, Lukić's path has faced setbacks. During the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a recall under coach Sergej Barbarez was hampered by an arm injury that prevented him from appearing in the official squad list for matches against Wales and Italy. Nevertheless, his presence in the 2026 World Cup squad remains a defining chapter of his career.
