A century of Hungarian football dominance and the fight for a club's identity
In short: Founded in 1885, Újpest FC has survived political upheaval, ownership shifts, and even a battle over its own crest. From the heights of European semi-finals to the intense local derbies of Budapest, discover the enduring legacy of one of Hungary's most decorated football institutions.
Újpest FC, originally established in 1885, has become a cornerstone of Hungarian football, boasting 20 league titles and 11 Magyar Kupa victories. The club's history is marked by remarkable stability in the top flight, having maintained its place in the Nemzeti Bajnokság I for 108 consecutive years, with only a single relegation since joining the first division in 1905. Their golden era arrived during the late 1960s and early 1970s, a period when they reached the semi-finals of both the European Cup in 1973–74 and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1961–62.
The club's identity has often been subject to external pressures. During the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, the club was known as Újpesti TE, and it underwent various name changes, such as Bp. Dózsa SE in 1950. Even more recently, the club's visual identity became a point of contention; after a 2017 crest change met with supporter protests and legal challenges from the parent club, UTE, management finally restored the traditional crest in July 2022.
Ownership and financial stability have also seen significant transitions. In 2011, Roderick Duchâtelet acquired 95% of the club's shares, bringing an injection of 150 million Hungarian forint. While a planned sale in early 2022 was stalled by the financial unpredictability of the Russo-Ukrainian War, a new era began in March 2024 when the MOL Group officially purchased the club for approximately 15 million euros. Today, the club continues to play at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion, a ground that has served as their home since 1922.
