How a 12-year-old phenom became baseball's most expensive superstar
In short: In 2017, the Seattle Mariners paid $1.75 million for a 16-year-old prospect. Today, Julio Rodríguez is locked into a deal that could reach $470 million. From a small Dominican town to breaking century-old records, his ascent has been nothing short of historic.
Born in Loma de Cabrera, Dominican Republic, on December 29, 2000, Julio Rodríguez's path to stardom was defined by early precocity. At just ten years old, he was already competing against children several years his senior. By 12, he was already catching the attention of professional scouts after hitting a ball to the outfield wall against a much older pitcher.
His professional trajectory was marked by rapid, record-breaking milestones. After signing with the Mariners in 2017, he transitioned from a catcher—trained by his father to utilize his build—to an elite center fielder. During his 2022 debut year, he turned into the inaugural player to reach the 25–25 milestone in a first season, ultimately securing both a Silver Slugger Award and the American League Rookie of the Year title.
Rodríguez's statistical dominance has consistently defied historical norms. In August 2023, he achieved a feat not seen since 1901, recording 17 hits in a four-game span. He has also become the first player to begin an MLB career with four consecutive 20–20 seasons. His value to the Seattle Mariners was cemented by a long-term contract extension signed in August 2024, which guarantees at least $209 million and could extend to 14 years.
Despite his offensive brilliance, his career has seen fluctuations, including a difficult 2024 season marked by an ankle injury. However, his ability to recover and dominate the second half of seasons remains a hallmark of his play, as seen in his 2025 performance where he helped lead Seattle to an AL West title.
