The youngest to do it: Julio Urías's record-breaking path to the mound
In short: At just 19 years old, Julio Urías shattered age barriers to become one of the youngest pitchers in Major League history to take the mound. His journey from a Mexican showcase to leading the league in ERA is a study in rapid ascent and the volatile nature of professional sports.
Julio Urías's rise began in June 2012, when the Los Angeles Dodgers discovered him at a showcase in Oaxaca. Signed on his 16th birthday, Urías quickly ascended the ranks. MLBpipeline.com identified him as baseball's premier left-handed pitching prospect by 2015, while Baseball America placed him at #10 overall in the nation.
His 2016 major league debut established him as the youngest starting pitcher to reach the Majors since Félix Hernández did in 2005. Having reached 20 years and 62 days, he set a Dodgers record for the youngest postseason pitcher, beating Don Drysdale's 1956 World Series age by a fortnight. He also achieved the distinction of being the youngest pitcher to ever start a postseason match.
Urías hit a career high in 2021, joining Max Scherzer as the first National League pitcher since 2016 to reach 20 wins in one year. That same year, he finished with a 20–3 record and a 2.96 ERA. In 2022, he led the National League in earned run average with a 2.16 mark, a season where he maintained a superb 0.90 ERA in August alone.
However, his career has been marked by significant volatility. Despite his elite production, his tenure with the Dodgers ended in 2023 following a domestic violence arrest. He was placed on administrative leave by MLB in September 2023, and his contract expired at the end of that season, leaving him without a professional pitching role since.
