From first-round prospect to a historic splash hit in McCovey Cove
In short: In 2017, the San Francisco Giants invested over $3 million in a young talent from Puerto Rico. Years of minor league development and injury setbacks followed, eventually leading to a moment of pure magic that rewrote the history books at Oracle Park.
Heliot Ramos, born September 7, 1999, entered professional baseball with immense expectations. Selected 19th overall in the 2017 MLB draft, the Puerto Rican outfielder signed with the Giants for a $3,101,700 bonus. His debut season in the Arizona League was nothing short of dominant; he led the league with a .645 slugging percentage and was recognized by Baseball America as the draft class's best power hitter, athlete, and defensive player.
His ascent through the minor leagues was marked by consistent excellence and high-profile accolades. By 2019, at just 19 years old, he was promoted to Double-A Richmond. He continued to garner attention as a perennial All-Star Futures Game selection in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Even when facing older competition in Triple-A Sacramento, Ramos maintained his impact, notably being added to the Giants' 40-man roster in November 2021.
The trajectory of his career reached a historic peak in 2024. After being called up to the majors in May, Ramos earned a selection to the National League All-Star Game, becoming the first homegrown Giants outfielder to achieve this since Chili Davis in 1986. He also etched his name into Oracle Park lore on September 15, 2024, when he hit a game-tying ninth-inning home run into McCovey Cove—the first 'splash hit' ever recorded by a right-handed batter in the stadium's 25-year history.
Following his tenure in San Francisco, Ramos was traded to the New York Yankees on August 3, 2026, in a deal involving Henry Lalane and Kaeden Kent.
