The Cuban outfielder who broke a century-old rookie record
In short: In 2018, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. achieved a feat of hitting consistency that had remained untouched since 1911. From defecting from Cuba to matching legendary records, his journey through professional baseball is a remarkable story of talent and transition.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s path to Major League Baseball was marked by significant upheaval. After playing for Sancti Spíritus and Industriales in the Cuban National Series, Gurriel and his brother, Yulieski, defected from Cuba in February 2016 following the Caribbean Series in the Dominican Republic. This move paved the way for his entry into the American market, where he was ranked as the sixth-best international prospect available. A $22 million deal, lasting seven years, was signed by him with the Toronto Blue Jays in November 2016.
During his early years in the MLB, Gurriel demonstrated extraordinary hitting prowess. In 2018, he became the first rookie in baseball's modern era to record 10 consecutive multi-hit games, a feat last accomplished by Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1911. He eventually extended this streak to 11 games, tying the all-time American League record set by Jackson in 1912. His time in Toronto also included a historic night in July 2022, when he recorded six hits in a single game against the Boston Red Sox, tying a franchise record.
Beyond individual milestones, Gurriel's career has been defined by family and resilience. On September 21, 2018, he and his brother Yuli made history as the first brothers to both hit two home runs on the same day. After being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in late 2022, he earned his first All-Star selection in 2023 and helped the team reach the World Series. Despite facing injuries, such as a torn ACL in 2025, he has remained a significant figure in the sport, eventually becoming a United States citizen in May 2023.
