How an environmental scientist became one of America's youngest big-city mayors
In short: From managing asthma in New Mexico to leading Phoenix, Kate Gallego has navigated complex urban challenges. Her journey from Harvard and Wharton to the mayor's office involves high-stakes elections, massive industrial investments, and critical debates over police accountability and urban zoning.
Kate Gallego assumed office as the 62nd mayor of Phoenix on March 21, 2019. She is only the second woman to hold the position in the city's history and remains one of the youngest mayors of a major U.S. city. Her political rise began on the Phoenix City Council, where she was first elected to represent the 8th district on November 5, 2013, and was re-elected in 2017. Before her tenure on the council, she worked for the Arizona Democratic Party and the Office of Tourism. She also contributed to strategic planning for the Salt River Project.
Gallego's policy focus has spanned economic development, urban planning, and public safety. She has supported legislation to legalize accessory dwelling units on lots previously restricted to single-family housing. In terms of economic impact, she helped secure a $265 billion semiconductor manufacturing plant for the city. Her administration has also navigated intense community debates regarding police accountability, following a 2018 incident where the Phoenix police department shot 44 people. Her interest in air quality stems from growing up with asthma. Additionally, she has worked to foster partnerships with Arizona State University to establish a new medical school downtown.
The mayor's leadership has been marked by significant electoral mandates. In her 2019 special election runoff, she defeated Daniel Valenzuela with 58.6% of the vote. By November 2020, she secured re-election with 60.7% of the vote, marking the highest number of votes ever cast in a Phoenix mayoral election. In early 2024, she was appointed to the Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee to advise the U.S. Department of Transportation on public transit improvements. Her 2020 victory saw her receive the largest voter turnout in the city's history. She also recently expressed her intention to seek another term in 2024.
