In short: In 1982, Kate Linder was hired for a single day of work on The Young and the Restless. She ended up staying for over four decades. Her career serves as a masterclass in longevity, transitioning from a one-day gig to becoming a permanent fixture of American daytime television.

Kate Linder's tenure on The Young and the Restless is defined by an extraordinary shift in scope. Originally cast in 1982 for what was intended to be a one-day role as Esther Valentine, she became one of the longest-serving actors in the history of American soap operas, remaining with the series for more than 40 years.

Her path to this milestone was non-linear. After graduating from San Francisco State University with a BA in theatre arts, Linder balanced her early career by working as a flight attendant for Transamerica Airlines. She initially built her television resume through roles on shows like Archie Bunker's Place and Bay City Blues before landing the CBS soap opera role that would define her legacy.

Linder’s influence extends beyond the screen into industry governance and philanthropy. Occupying a position as a Daytime Governor within the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, she assists in managing the Emmy Awards. Her advocacy work is equally extensive; she serves as a national spokesperson for The ALS Association—a cause personal to her, as her husband Dr. Ronald L. Linder passed away from the disease in 2017—and works with organizations including TV Cares and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

While many soap actors struggle to transition to film, Linder achieved a notable late-career pivot. After three decades in daytime, she debuted in independent films like Hysteria and Erased, eventually co-starring with A-list talent such as Julia Roberts and Jennifer Aniston in the 2016 film Mother's Day. In 2008, she became only the third actor to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame based solely on soap opera merits.
