From Finnish junior leagues to NHL stardom: the rise of Kasperi Kapanen
In short: Born into a hockey dynasty, Kasperi Kapanen has navigated a complex path from the junior ranks of Finland to the bright lights of the NHL. His journey includes blockbuster trades, gold medals, and a legacy tied deeply to his father, Sami.
Kasperi Kapanen's professional trajectory is deeply intertwined with his family's hockey roots in Finland. Sami, his father, belonged to a consortium that bought the Finnish club KalPa, the team where Kasperi played his first professional games throughout the 2012–13 SM-liiga season. This early exposure to top-tier competition saw him playing alongside his father before he transitioned to the international stage.
His ascent through the ranks was marked by significant milestones, including being selected 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2014 NHL entry draft. Despite being ranked as high as 18th by some NHL teams, he eventually signed a three-year entry-level contract with Pittsburgh on 11 July 2014. His career has since been defined by movement between major franchises, including a high-profile trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2015 as part of a deal involving Phil Kessel.
Kapanen has proven his ability to deliver in high-stakes moments, such as scoring the overtime goal to win gold at the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship. More recently, he has played for the St. Louis Blues and the Edmonton Oilers, the latter of which he joined via waivers on 19 November 2024. His career has not been without controversy; in February 2024, a Finnish court sentenced him to a fine of €108,700 following a suspected aggravated drunk driving incident reported by Yle in September 2023.
Beyond his individual stats, Kapanen represents a multi-generational hockey lineage. He is the grandson of former professional player Hannu Kapanen, and his brother, Konsta, has also entered the competitive world of international junior hockey.
