How a high school manga became a global critical darling
In short: Most manga find success through mainstream appeal, but Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! achieved a rare feat: earning high-brow critical acclaim from prestigious outlets like The New Yorker. It captures the grueling, imaginative reality of animation production, turning a niche hobby into a celebrated masterpiece of modern storytelling.
Sumito Ōwara launched the manga within Shogakukan's Monthly Big Comic Spirits on 27 July 2016. Ōwara, who studied fine arts at the Toyo Institute of Art & Design, first gained recognition in 2015 after a scout noticed his submission at the Comitia 111 convention. The manga quickly gained momentum, winning the Bros. Comic Award in 2017 and reaching over 500,000 copies in circulation by early 2020.
The narrative centers on three high school girls at Shibahama High who form an animation club. Midori Asakusa provides the visionary drive, believing that "concept is everything," while her friend Sayaka Kanamori acts as the pragmatic producer who manages finances and negotiations. They are joined by Tsubame Mizusaki, a charismatic model who was banned from the school's official anime club by her parents. To circumvent this, the girls deceptively register their group as a "film club" to secure a teacher's approval.
The series' transition to television in 2020 marked a turning point for its critical reception. Masaaki Yuasa oversaw the anime, which secured the 2021 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival's Grand Prize for Television Animation plus the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival's animation division's top award. Its prestige was cemented when it was named one of the best television shows of 2020 by both The New York Times and The New Yorker, a rare crossover for Japanese animation into mainstream Western literary and cultural criticism.
