How a childhood prank cost a rising star his place at Barcelona
In short: In 2010, fifteen-year-old Keita Baldé played a simple joke involving an ice cube. The consequence was far from playful: Barcelona sent the promising winger on loan, a move that eventually altered the trajectory of his professional career and led him to the heights of the Senegal national team.
Keita Baldé’s ascent through the FC Barcelona academy was interrupted by a moment of adolescent mischief. During a youth tournament in Qatar, the then-15-year-old placed an ice cube in a teammate's bed. The disciplinary response from Barcelona was significant, resulting in a loan to the satellite club UE Cornellà. This move unexpectedly granted Cornellà a portion of his playing rights, a detail that would later influence his €300,000 transfer to Lazio in 2011.
Despite the setback, Baldé’s talent remained undeniable. After scoring 47 goals for Cornellà's youth side, he attracted interest from giants like Manchester United and Real Madrid, though he ultimately moved to Italy. His time at Lazio saw remarkable individual feats, including a hat-trick against Palermo in April 2017 that was the fastest in Serie A since the 1974–75 season. He also became the first player to score a brace in the Derby della Capitale since the 1998–99 season.
His career has since spanned several leagues, from Monaco and Inter Milan to stints in Russia and Turkey. Beyond the pitch, his legacy is tied to international success; he was part of the Senegal squad that secured the 202 and was honored by President Macky Sall with the rank of Grand Officer of the National Order of the Lion in 2022. While his journey has included disciplinary hurdles, including a 2022 ban for violating testing procedures, he remains a prominent figure in African football.
