How a third-round draft pick became an NFL receiving legend
In short: In 2013, scouts predicted a first-round talent, yet Keenan Allen fell to the third round. Through injuries and roster shifts, he didn't just survive the NFL; he rewrote the record books, becoming the fastest player in history to reach 1,000 career receptions.
Keenan Allen's path to professional stardom was marked by unexpected setbacks. Entering the 2013 NFL Draft, pundits estimated he would be a first-round selection. However, a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sprain prevented him from participating in the NFL Scouting Combine. At his Pro Day, Allen was only at 80% health, resulting in a 4.71-second 40-yard dash that contributed to him being selected 76th overall by the San Diego Chargers.
Despite the lower draft position, Allen's impact was immediate. His rookie season was historic; he broke the Chargers' franchise record for receptions in a single season, surpassing LaDainian Tomlinson with 61 catches. He also broke the team's rookie receiving yards record, with 1,046 yards, surpassing John Jefferson's 1978 mark of 1,001. His performance earned him several honors, including being named the NFL Rookie of the Year by Sporting News and the Pepsi NEXT NFL Rookie of the Year.
Allen's career has been a testament to resilience. After suffering a devastating ACL tear in 2016, he returned in 2017 to be named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year. Throughout his tenure with the Chargers, he became a prolific force, eventually becoming the franchise's all-time leader in receptions and one of only two players in team history to exceed 10,000 career receiving yards. His ability to adapt—even moving from a defensive back recruit in college to a premier wide receiver—remains a hallmark of his professional journey.
