From high school legend to the NFL and the elite college ranks

After building a dominant dynasty at the high school level in Ohio, Kerry Coombs ascended through the ranks of the Big Ten and the NFL, proving his defensive expertise at every level of the game.

Kerry Coombs' coaching journey is defined by a remarkable period of dominance in Ohio high school football. After graduating from Colerain High School in 1979, Coombs eventually returned to lead his alma mater as head coach. Over 16 seasons, he amassed an impressive 161–34 record, guiding the Cardinals to ten state playoffs and five state semifinals. His tenure included a perfect 15–0 season and a Division I state championship in 2004, alongside seven consecutive Greater Miami Conference titles from 2000 to 2006.

His transition to the collegiate and professional levels brought both high-level success and significant structural challenges. At the University of Cincinnati, Coombs helped lead a defense that topped the nation with 26 interceptions in 2007. He later moved to Ohio State, where he served as defensive backs coach and eventually assistant coordinator. In the NFL, joining Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans in 2018, he coached a secondary unit that ranked sixth in the league in passing defense, recording nine sacks and ten interceptions.

However, the complexities of high-stakes coaching also brought periods of instability. During his time as the sole defensive coordinator at Ohio State in 2021, the team struggled significantly against the pass, ranking 122nd in the FBS in passing yards allowed per game. Following a shift in play-calling responsibilities, Coombs and the university parted ways in early 2022. After subsequent stints at Cincinnati and serving as interim head coach, Coombs was announced as the special teams coordinator for the University of Michigan in December 2025.
