How a third-round underdog became the highest-paid safety in NFL history
In short: In 2016, scouts questioned Kevin Byard's speed, projecting him as a late-round pick. Yet, within two seasons, he was an All-Pro leader and a Pro Bowler. His trajectory from a Middle Tennessee standout to a record-breaking contract redefined the value of elite defensive playmakers.
Kevin Byard's ascent began at Middle Tennessee State University, where he set a school record with 19 career interceptions between 2012 and 2015. Despite being ranked as the fifth-best strong safety prospect by DraftScout.com, and facing conflicting projections that placed him as late as the seventh round, the Tennessee Titans selected him in the third round (64th overall) in 2016.
Byard quickly proved his doubters wrong. In his 2017 season, he co-led the NFL in interceptions and led the league in takeaways with 10—comprising eight interceptions and two fumble recoveries. This performance earned him both a Pro Bowl selection and a first-team All-Pro honor, cementing his status as a premier defensive force.
His impact on the field translated into unprecedented financial value. Byard received a five-year extension worth $70.5 million from the Titans in July 2019. A $31 million guarantee ensured he became the NFL's top-earning safety during that period. Byard's career has since seen him move through the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears, continuing a legacy of high-level defensive play.
Beyond his statistical dominance, Byard's career is marked by moments of high drama, such as his $10,026 fine in 2018 for celebrating on the Dallas Cowboys' star logo after an interception. Whether through his ball-hawking ability or his ability to defy scouting reports, Byard has remained a consistent presence in professional football.
