How a $100,000 international signing became a postseason legend
In short: In 2010, the Seattle Mariners secured a young Dominican talent with a modest signing bonus. Since then, Ketel Marte has transformed from a struggling prospect into an All-Star powerhouse, shattering postseason records and cementing his place as a cornerstone of the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise.
Ketel Marte’s journey to the Major Leagues began on August 13, 2010, when he joined the Mariners organization as an international free agent. After climbing through the minor leagues—including stints with the Everett AquaSox and Clinton LumberKings—he debuted in the big leagues on July 31, 2015. While his early years were marked by challenges, including a difficult 2016 season plagued by mononucleosis and a thumb injury, a 2016–17 trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks provided a fresh start.
The move to Arizona allowed Marte to redefine his role. Originally a shortstop, the Diamondbacks moved him to second base ahead of the 2018 season. This transition preceded a period of immense individual success. In 2018, he led all of MLB in triples with 12. By 2023, he had become a postseason icon, leading Arizona to its first pennant since 2001. During that run, he earned the NLCS MVP award and set a new MLB record for the longest postseason hitting streak, reaching 20 consecutive games.
Marte's impact is reflected in his significant contract extensions, including a $76 million deal in 2022 and a massive $116.5 million six-year extension in 2025. Beyond the statistics, his career has been marked by profound personal resilience. He has navigated the loss of his mother, Elpidia Valdez, in 2017 and dealt with high-profile challenges, such as a $400,000 robbery at his Scottsdale home. Despite these hurdles, he remains a perennial All-Star, recently earning his first Silver Slugger Award in 2024.
