King Tutankhamun and the Discovery of His Tomb · 13:56 · Video: World History Encyclopedia · Watch at the source

In short: Discover the life and unexpected end of Tutankhamun, the young pharaoh who ascended the throne at age eight or nine. This overview examines his transition from Tutankhaten to a ruler of Egypt and the remarkable contents of his four-room burial site.

Born during the eleventh year of his father Akhenaten's reign, Tutankhamun was originally named Tutankhaten. He ascended to the throne in 1336 BCE as a child, having been engaged to his half-sister, Ankhsenamun. His reign was relatively brief, ending with his sudden death in January of 1327 BCE at the age of nineteen.

The discovery of his tomb revealed a collection of four distinct rooms: the Burial Chamber, the Antechamber, the Annex, and the Treasury. These spaces were filled with an array of treasures intended to provide the young pharaoh with everything necessary for his existence in the next life.
