In short: The Kingdom of Portugal emerged from a semi-autonomous county to become a major global power, spanning centuries of exploration and colonial expansion. Yet, its journey from a medieval monarchy to a modern republic was marked by dynastic shifts, personal unions with Spain, and a final, dramatic revolutionary collapse.

The origins of the Portuguese state lie in the 9th-century County of Portugal, a vassal territory within the Kingdom of León. Independence was a gradual process, solidified in three pivotal moments: the acclamation of Afonso Henriques as king in 1139, the Treaty of Zamora in 1143, and the 1179 Papal Bull Manifestis Probatum. These events established the legitimacy of the Afonsine dynasty, which ruled until the 1383–1385 interregnum.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal leveraged its maritime prowess to build a vast colonial empire. This era of influence faced significant challenges, including a personal union with Habsburg Spain from 1580 to 1640. Following the Restoration War, the House of Braganza took the throne. While the kingdom maintained status as a major power through its control of Brazil, the loss of that colony and the 1890 British Ultimatum, which halted African expansion, signaled a period of decline.

The monarchy's final years were defined by internal instability. The 1908 Lisbon Regicide, which claimed the lives of King Charles and his heir, accelerated the rise of republican sentiment. By 5 October 1910, a revolution forced King Manuel II into exile, ending the monarchy. Although a brief attempt to restore the crown occurred in 1919, it failed to gain traction. The legacy of the empire persisted as overseas provinces until the late 20th century, concluding with the handover of Macau in 1999.
