The Kingdom of Naples was a European powerhouse ruled by foreign dynasties for centuries
In short: Spanning southern Italy, the Kingdom of Naples was a major economic and military engine for Spanish and French empires. Despite its immense wealth and strategic importance, the state was often treated as a resource to be drained, leading to massive public debt, frequent revolts, and a reputation for chaotic brilliance.
Formally emerging after the 1282 War of the Sicilian Vespers, the Kingdom of Naples occupied the southern Italian mainland. While historians use the name Naples, the state officially maintained the title of the Kingdom of Sicily for centuries, distinguishing itself from the island of Sicily as the territory on this side of the Strait of Messina. This complex political identity persisted even as the region passed between the Angevins, the Aragonese, and eventually the Spanish Bourbons.
By the 17th century, Naples stood as the most populous territory in the Spanish Empire outside of Castile. Its wealth was staggering, yet it was systematically hollowed out to fund Spain's global military ambitions. Between 1612 and 1646, taxes tripled while public debt quintupled, with over half of all state revenue diverted solely to interest payments. This fiscal strain pushed the populace to the brink, culminating in the 1647 Neapolitan Republic revolt, which served as a precursor to later European revolutionary movements.
Culturally, the kingdom was a paradox of sophistication and perceived savagery. While it was a hub for intellectual life, travelers often described it as a paradise inhabited by devils, a phrase tracing back to 1539. This duality extended to daily life; 18th-century accounts famously depicted the local poor eating spaghetti with their bare hands in the streets, a spectacle that became a tourist attraction. Despite its high illiteracy and internal social tensions, the kingdom remained a vital, if often exploited, center of Mediterranean power until its final merger in 1816 into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
