In short: He arrived in Japan weighing less than 70 kg with zero professional experience. Today, he is one of the most formidable forces in sumo. Discover how a young man from a nomadic community transformed his physical strength and fighting style to reach the prestigious rank of ōzeki.

Born Byambachuluun Lkhagvasuren in the Dornod Province of Mongolia, Kirishima’s foundation was built on the rigors of nomadic life. Growing up in a community near the borders of China and Russia, he spent his youth riding horses to assist his father’s sheep herd—a childhood habit that developed the leg and waist strength essential for professional wrestling. In 2014, he traveled to Japan as one of five recruits to trial at the Michinoku stable, despite having no prior sumo training. His lineage even connects to the wrestling tradition, as his grandfather, Yatamsuren, was a celebrated bökh wrestler. This strength was evident even when he stood over 1.80 m tall during his initial trials.

His ascent was marked by significant adaptation. Initially competing as Kiribayama, he struggled with the language and the physical demands of the stable dormitory. After suffering a left knee ligament injury that forced him to abandon a technique-heavy style, he pivoted to a strategy centered on forward momentum. This tactical shift, combined with the mentorship of stablemates like the legendary Yokozuna Kakuryū, propelled him through the divisions. His early years in the lower divisions were a test of endurance, as he faced significant competition from wrestlers like Hamamachi. He eventually achieved a perfect 7–0 record in the sandanme division during the 2015 tournament.

By May 2023, his progress culminated in promotion to ōzeki, the sport's second-highest rank. Upon this achievement, he adopted the ring name 'Kirishima,' inheriting the name of his stablemaster. While his career has seen periods of injury and the loss of his rank, his resilience remains a hallmark of his story. He has secured three makuuchi championships and continues to be a central figure in the highest tiers of the sport. His achievements include winning the All Japan Rikishi Championship in October 2023. Throughout his career, he has earned nine special prizes and two runner-up finishes in the top division.
