How a ₹50 note and a nail became the unlikely symbols of cinematic fate
In short: In the 2021 Telugu action thriller Krack, a simple currency note, a green mango, and a common nail serve as ominous harbingers of destiny. These mundane objects weave together the lives of a relentless police inspector and a ruthless gangster, anchoring a narrative inspired by real-life events across Andhra Pradesh.
Directed by Gopichand Malineni, Krack stars Ravi Teja as a circle inspector locked in a high-stakes conflict with a sadistic gangster. The film’s screenplay, which draws thematic inspiration from the 2018 Kannada movie Tagaru, is built upon a series of true incidents. The plot follows the inspector’s pursuit of various criminals, including a convict involved in the Mumbai blasts, using a narrative device where seemingly trivial items—a ₹50 note, a mango, and a nail—foreshadow the fates of those who cross the law.
The production journey was fraught with challenges, beginning with a launch on 14 November 2019 and facing significant delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these interruptions, the film wrapped in December 2020 and finally hit theaters on 9 January 2021. Its release was not without drama; morning and afternoon shows were initially cancelled due to financial disputes between the producer, B. Madhu, and exhibitors, though negotiations eventually allowed evening screenings to proceed.
Upon release, Krack was a commercial success, grossing approximately ₹70.6 crore and becoming the highest-grossing film of Ravi Teja’s career at the time. Critics praised the film as a wholesome commercial entertainer, though some noted that its dense detailing occasionally strained the narrative flow. The film’s technical execution, featuring music by Thaman S and cinematography by G. K. Vishnu, helped solidify its status as a significant entry in the Telugu action genre, eventually earning Varalaxmi Sarathkumar a SIIMA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
