A sacred promise to inherit a legendary name
In short: In the rigid hierarchy of professional sumo, some legacies are more than just family tradition. For Kotozakura Masakatsu II, reaching the rank of ōzeki was not just a career milestone, but the fulfillment of a childhood vow made to his late grandfather.
The lineage of the Sadogatake stable is written in the ranks of the sumo ring. Born Masakatsu Kamatani in 1997, the current ōzeki Kotozakura Masakatsu II is the product of a deep wrestling dynasty. He is the son of the former sekiwake Kotonowaka and the grandson of the 53rd yokozuna, Kotozakura. This connection is more than genealogical; it is contractual. As a young child in elementary school, Masakatsu promised his grandfather that he would inherit the prestigious Kotozakura ring name if he ever achieved the rank of ōzeki.
His path to the top was marked by both brilliance and physical hardship. After a professional debut in November 201 and a rapid ascent through the divisions, he reached the top makuuchi division in March 2020. However, his career has been a test of resilience. In July 2021, a severe knee injury involving the medial collateral ligament and meniscus threatened to sideline him for a year, forcing him to rely on regenerative surgery rather than traditional operations.
The fulfillment of his promise arrived on January 31, 2024, when the Sumo Association officially promoted him to ōzeki. This achievement made him the first ōzeki from Chiba Prefecture since 1955. While he initially continued to use his father's name, Kotonowaka, to honor his lineage, he announced his intention to officially adopt the Kotozakura name starting in May 2024, finally bridging the gap between his childhood promise and his professional reality.
