How a blockbuster film became the unlikely savior of India's struggling theatrical business
In short: When the 2021 action drama Master faced a nine-month delay due to the pandemic, its producers refused to bypass cinemas for streaming. Their commitment to a big-screen experience eventually helped revive the Tamil Nadu theatrical industry, turning the film into a global box office leader despite unprecedented distribution challenges.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Master follows an alcoholic professor, John Durairaj, who takes a teaching assignment at a juvenile detention center. There, he clashes with Bhavani, a ruthless gangster who exploits vulnerable inmates to shield himself from criminal liability. The film’s narrative, which draws inspiration from real-life stories and cinematic tropes, explores themes of redemption and systemic corruption, positioning its protagonist as a flawed hero rather than a traditional commercial star.
The production journey was marked by significant hurdles. Principal photography spanned 129 working days across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Karnataka, concluding in February 2020. The project faced intense scrutiny, including an Income Tax Department inquiry into Vijay’s finances and political protests at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation filming site. Despite these disruptions, the team remained focused on a theatrical debut, rejecting offers to move the film directly to streaming platforms during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
When Master finally hit theaters on 13 January 2021, it arrived in a volatile environment. The film’s release sparked a public debate over safety protocols, as the Tamil Nadu government initially approved 100% seating capacity following a request from the lead actor, only to have the central government revoke the order back to 50% occupancy. Despite these constraints and a fragmented release strategy, the film grossed between ₹220 and 300 crore. Its success was widely credited by trade analysts for breathing life back into the Tamil film industry, which had suffered heavy losses during the pandemic.
The film’s legacy is also defined by its rapid transition to digital platforms. While the producers prioritized the theatrical experience, Master became the fastest Tamil film to reach a streaming service, premiering on Amazon Prime Video just 16 days after its theatrical debut. This hybrid approach, combined with its massive box office performance, solidified its status as a pivotal moment in the post-pandemic recovery of Indian cinema.
