From five-star recruit to NFL journeyman: the resilient career of Kyle Allen
In short: A top-ranked high school prospect and five-star recruit, Kyle Allen's path to the NFL was anything but linear. After a standout collegiate career split between Texas A&M and Houston, he has navigated the high-stakes world of professional quarterbacking, proving his durability across multiple franchises.
Kyle Allen entered the national spotlight as a highly touted five-star recruit out of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ranked as the best pro-style quarterback in his class, he committed to Texas A&M in June 2013. His collegiate journey was marked by significant shifts, including a high-profile transfer to the University of Houston in 2016 after completing his time with the Aggies.
During his time at Texas A&M, Allen demonstrated flashes of brilliance, such as leading the team to a 41–38 victory over the #3 Auburn Tigers in 2014. However, his tenure was also defined by intense competition, notably facing off against future star Kyler Murray. Allen eventually finished his Aggies career with 3,532 passing yards and 33 touchdowns over 20 games.
Allen's professional career began as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers in 2018. He became a vital backup, notably starting the final game of the 2018 season and leading the Panthers to five consecutive victories in 2019. His career has since seen him move through several organizations, including Washington, the Houston Texans, the Buffalo Bills, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Detroit Lions.
Despite facing setbacks—such as a dislocated ankle in 2020 and various injuries—Allen has remained a persistent figure in the NFL. His ability to secure roster spots and win quarterback competitions, such as his recent battle for the backup role in Detroit, highlights the perseverance required to survive in professional football.
