From Ontario soccer fields to the heights of European basketball
In short: Before he was a defensive force in the EuroCup, Kyle Alexander was a multi-sport athlete in Canada. His journey from picking up basketball in grade 11 to signing major professional contracts across Spain, Israel, and Turkey is a masterclass in athletic evolution and persistence.
Born in Scarborough, Ontario, on October 21, 1996, Kyle Alexander did not grow up as a basketball specialist. During his time at Orangeville Prep, he competed in soccer and volleyball, only adopting basketball during his eleventh-grade year. This late start did not prevent him from reaching the collegiate level, where he spent four years playing for the Tennessee Volunteers.
His collegiate career was marked by impressive efficiency. During his final year, Alexander recorded 7.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per match, with field goal accuracy at 61.4 percent and long-range shooting at 42.9 percent. This performance helped guide Tennessee to the Sweet Sixteen. Following the 2019 NBA draft, where he went undrafted, he navigated the professional landscape through the NBA Summer League and a two-way contract with the Miami Heat.
While his NBA debut occurred in August 2020, Alexander's true impact has been felt across the top European leagues. He has established a significant presence in the Spanish Liga ACB with clubs like Fuenlabrada and Valencia, and has played in the Israeli Premier League with Hapoel Tel Aviv. Most recently, his defensive prowess was highlighted during the 2024–25 EuroCup season, where he led the competition in blocked shots, averaging 2.2 blocks per game.
By June 2026, Alexander signed a two-year deal with PAOK Thessaloniki. Joining as part of a roster reconstruction under coach Andrea Trinchieri, Alexander brings a proven defensive presence and athleticism to the Greek Basketball League. His career trajectory reflects a global movement, spanning from the Canadian CEBL to the highest tiers of European competition.
