From K-pop idol to a powerhouse of Korean television drama
In short: Kwon Nara’s career trajectory illustrates a sophisticated pivot in the South Korean entertainment industry. By transitioning from a founding member of a girl group to a lead actress in some of the highest-rated dramas in cable history, she navigated the complex shift from idol to serious performer.
Born on March 13, 1991, Kwon Nara began her professional journey as an acting trainee for Fantagio Entertainment while still in middle school. This early training provided a foundation that eventually led her to become a founding member of the girl group Hello Venus. Launching on May 9, 2012, via the four-song mini-album Venus, the ensemble's lead track hit position 35 within the Gaon rankings.
While she initially gained recognition through music, Nara began weaving acting into her public persona early on. She appeared in a cameo role as a stewardess in the SBS drama Take Care of Us alongside fellow group member Yooyoung. However, it was not until 2017 that she secured her first major acting role in the romantic comedy Suspicious Partner, marking a definitive shift toward a career in television drama.
Nara's rise to prominence accelerated between 2018 and 2020. She starred in notable works like My Mister and Your Honor before landing her first lead role in the medical prison drama Doctor Prisoner in 2019. Her popularity peaked with the commercial success of Itaewon Class, which became the seventh highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history. This momentum allowed her to take on diverse roles, from a courtesan in the historical comedy Royal Secret Agent to an immortal turned human in Bulgasal: Immortal Souls.
Her career is marked by strategic agency moves, signing with A-Man Project in 2019 and later C-JeS Entertainment in June 2022. These transitions reflect a deliberate move toward establishing herself as a versatile lead actress capable of carrying high-budget productions across various genres.
