From Crete to the NFL: The meteoric rise of Kyle Hamilton
In short: Born in Greece to a South Korean mother and an African American father, Kyle Hamilton has navigated a global childhood to become a cornerstone of the Baltimore Ravens defense. His journey from Notre Dame to a record-breaking NFL contract is a masterclass in elite athletic progression.
Kyle Hamilton’s path to professional football is as geographically diverse as his heritage. Born on March 16, 2001, in Heraklion, Crete, Hamilton spent his early years living in Russia and Israel before settling in the Atlanta area. The son of professional basketball trainer Derrick Hamilton, Kyle developed his skills at the Marist School in Georgia before committing to the University of Notre Dame.
His collegiate career was marked by immediate impact and significant resilience. As a freshman in 2019, he earned Freshman All-American honors after recording 41 tackles and four interceptions. While his 2021 season was interrupted by a knee injury, he nonetheless achieved consensus All-American status. This performance made him a premier prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft, where the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the first round, 14th overall.
In the NFL, Hamilton has transitioned from a second-stringer to a historic defensive force. His 2023 season was particularly notable; during a Week 3 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, he tied an NFL record by recording three sacks in a single half. He has consistently earned Pro Bowl honors, appearing in the game in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
The financial scale of his success is unprecedented for his position. In August 2025, Hamilton signed a four-year, $100.4 million contract extension with the Ravens. The deal includes $82 million in guarantees, marking the largest contract ever awarded to a safety in the history of the NFL.
