The high-stakes career of the NFL's most efficient, yet controversial, backup

In short: He was often the lowest-rated starter in the league, yet he consistently delivered winning records. From a record-breaking rookie season in Chicago to a high-priced role in Buffalo, Kyle Orton’s career was a masterclass in navigating the fine line between statistical inefficiency and team success.

Kyle Orton’s NFL journey was defined by a striking paradox: high-level winning accompanied by low individual efficiency. During his 2005 rookie season with the Chicago Bears, Orton was thrust into the starting lineup following an injury to Rex Grossman. While he led the team to a 10–5 record in games he started—including an eight-game winning streak—he finished the season with the lowest quarterback rating in the NFL among qualified passers at 5<0xC2>9.7.

His ability to manage games, rather than dominate them, became his professional trademark. The Bears' coaching staff specifically instructed him to minimize mistakes and rely on the rushing attack and defense. This pragmatic approach continued during his tenure with the Denver Broncos. After being traded from Chicago in 2009, Orton led the Broncos to a 6–0 start, earning AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after a dramatic overtime victory against the New England Patriots.

However, the volatility of the position eventually caught up to him. In Denver, his era ended when he lost the starting role to Tim Tebow during the 2011 season. Orton later moved through the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys, and Buffalo Bills. In 2014, he became the highest-paid backup in the league when he signed with Buffalo, eventually reclaiming a starting role and leading the Bills to a 9–7 record—their first winning season since 2004—before retiring at the end of that season.
