From a Jamaican playground to NFL stardom: the rise of Danielle Hunter
In short: A coach once spotted a young boy playing tag on roller skates and saw a football star. That boy was Danielle Hunter, who transitioned from a high school wide receiver to one of the NFL's most relentless defensive ends, making history as the youngest player to reach 50 career sacks.
Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, on October 29, 1994, Danielle Hunter moved to the United States at age eight. His path to professional football was unconventional; after failing wide receiver tryouts during his freshman year at Morton Ranch High School, he moved to defensive end, eventually leading his team to its first Class 5A State Playoffs appearance.
Hunter's collegiate career at Louisiana State University (LSU) was marked by rapid ascent. After playing primarily on special teams as a 17-year-old freshman in 2012, he became a key defensive force for the Tigers. By his junior year in 2014, he was a standout starter, helping an LSU defense that ranked second in the SEC in scoring defense with 17.5 points per game.
Entering the 2015 NFL draft, Hunter was a highly-rated prospect, noted for his exceptional athleticism. The Minnesota Vikings chose him during the third round at number 88 overall. During his tenure in Minnesota, he achieved remarkable milestones, including being the youngest player in the NFL in 2015 and later becoming the youngest player in NFL history to reach 50 career sacks.
His dominance was reflected in his statistical output and accolades. In 2018, he recorded 14.5 sacks and was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after a standout performance against the Lions. His ability to disrupt plays was underscored by his versatility, ranging from recording safeties to scoring touchdowns on fumble returns.
