Did ancient Sumerian satirists use humor to challenge the rigid boundaries of royal law?
In short: While ancient Iraq is celebrated for the Laws of Hammurabi, the world's earliest casuistic legal codes, these statutes were not exhaustive. When legal problems fell outside royal legislation, Sumerian writers turned to satire. These short stories raised subversive questions and offered surprising solutions that challenged the established moral and legal order.
Jana Matuszak, an assistant professor of Sumerology at the University of Chicago's Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, explores how ancient literature navigated the gaps in formal law. While the Laws of Hammurabi remain the most famous example of early legal codification, they could not account for every social or moral dilemma. Sumerian authors used satirical tales to probe these grey areas, effectively using humor as a tool for social critique and intellectual subversion.
Matuszak’s research focuses on the intersection of Sumerian language, poetics, and legal theory. Her work examines how ancient texts utilized humor to address themes that traditional legal frameworks ignored. By analyzing these satirical narratives, she highlights how ancient writers engaged with complex issues of gender, religion, and morality, often presenting perspectives that stood in stark contrast to the rigid, state-sanctioned legal codes of the time.
Beyond her work on legal satire, Matuszak has explored the construction of gender in didactic poetry and mythology. Her monograph, which examines a dramatic debate about womanhood dating back nearly 4,000 years, provides a critical look at how ancient literature interrogated social identities. She is currently developing a project on Sumerian mock hymns, further investigating the poetics of subversion in the ancient world. These studies demonstrate that Sumerian literature was not merely a record of tradition, but a dynamic space for questioning authority and exploring the limits of human morality.
