The first openly non-binary player to reach a WNBA triple-double
In short: Layshia Clarendon didn't just break records; they broke barriers. As the first openly transgender and non-binary player in the WNBA to undergo top surgery, Clarendon navigated a professional career defined by elite playmaking, social justice advocacy, and a commitment to living authentically in the public eye.
Layshia Clarendon's professional journey spanned eleven seasons in the WNBA, beginning with a 2013 draft selection by the Indiana Fever. During their early career, Clarendon established a reputation as a vocal leader and 'elite facilitator.' This leadership was evident during their time at the University of California, Berkeley, where they led the Bears to a 28–2 record and the team's first-ever Final Four appearance in the 2012–2013 season. Clarendon also represented the United States on the international stage, winning gold medals at the 2009 U19 World's Championship and the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. Beyond the stat sheet, Clarendon became a landmark figure for LGBTQ+ representation. In 2015, they were named Outsports' "Female Hero of the Year" for their advocacy. They later came out as non-binary and underwent chest masculinization surgery in 2021.
This transition was met with public support from league leadership, including WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and New York Liberty owner Joseph Tsai, who praised Clarendon for living without societal constraints. Clarendon also served on the league's Social Justice Council, engaging in advocacy regarding race, gun violence, and LGBTQ+ rights. Clarendon's career was marked by significant milestones across multiple franchises, including the Atlanta Dream, Connecticut Sun, and New York Liberty. In 2024, while playing for the Los Angeles Sparks, Clarendon achieved a career-high 30 points and recorded their first official triple-double. They retired in September 2024, leaving a legacy as a pioneer who balanced high-level athleticism with a mission to 'open closet doors' for others in sports.
