In short: In the Republic of Ireland's football pyramid, the second tier usually lacks a direct ticket to the continent. Yet, a specific trophy path has allowed underdog clubs to bypass the hierarchy, occasionally competing against Europe's elite while still technically playing in the division below the top flight.

The League of Ireland First Division serves as the second-highest level of the Irish football league system. Formed in 1985 to replace the League of Ireland B Division, it has functioned as a summer league since 2003. While the division typically lacks direct qualification for European competitions, a unique mechanism exists: winning the FAI Cup can grant a club a seat at the continental table regardless of their league standing.

The first team to exploit this occurred in the 1989–90 season. Bray Wanderers won the FAI Cup and qualified for the 1990–91 European Cup Winners' Cup. Interestingly, while Sligo Rovers also qualified for Europe in 1994–95 after winning the FAI Cup, they were actually promoted to the Premier Division during that same period. Bray Wanderers, however, provided a rarer example in the 1999–2000 season; they were relegated to the First Division after finishing eleventh in the Premier Division but still embarked on a UEFA Cup campaign because of their previous cup success.

The path to the First Division is also complex. Since 1985–86, a promotion and relegation system has linked it to the Premier Division, including a play-off system introduced in 1992–93. While there is no formal link to the three third-level provincial leagues, clubs can be invited to join. For instance, St James's Gate was invited in 1990–91, and Cabinteely joined in 2015. More recently, Treaty United joined from the Munster senior league in 2021, and Kerry was awarded a license in November 2022 to join for the 2023 season.
