From French courts to WNBA records: the rise of Leïla Lacan
In short: In just a few years, Leïla Lacan transformed from a teenage prospect into a WNBA record-breaker. Her journey from the French domestic leagues to the global stage illustrates a meteoric rise defined by elite playmaking and a rapid ascent through the highest levels of international basketball.
Born in France to a family of Chadian descent, Leïla Lacan began her professional journey in 2022 with Union Féminine Angers Basket 49. Her early career was marked by steady development in the Ligue Féminine de Basketball, where she averaged 12.7 points and 3.0 assists during the 2023–24 season. By 2024, her talent became impossible to ignore, leading her to join Basket Landes, where she secured a league championship and was named the Finals MVP. Lacan’s transition to the global stage was swift. She was selected 10th overall in the 2024 WNBA draft by the Connecticut Sun. However, her path was non-linear; she prioritized her national team duties, competing in the 2024 Summer Olympics where she helped France secure a silver medal.
It wasn't until July 2024 that she made her WNBA debut, eventually making a significant impact on the Sun's roster. Following her arrival, the team won 9 of their 11 wins. Her technical proficiency was highlighted during her rookie season when she tied a WNBA record for the most assists without a turnover in a single game, finishing with 14. This poise earned her a spot on the Associated Press All-Rookie Team. Lacan continues to be a cornerstone for the French national team, having already secured a bronze medal at EuroBasket Women 2023 and a silver in 2024. Her career trajectory serves as a blueprint for modern international athletes navigating multi-league professional structures.
