The meteoric rise and complex career of Scottish striker Leigh Griffiths
In short: From a sixteen-year-old debutant at Livingston to a Scottish Premier League star, Leigh Griffiths has navigated a career defined by prolific scoring and significant controversy. His journey through clubs like Dundee, Wolves, and Celtic reveals the volatile nature of professional football success.
Leigh Griffiths began his professional journey at Livingston, making his debut as a sixteen-year-old on 30 December 2006. His early talent was evident, leading to a £125,000 move to Dundee in June 2009. He was a prominent figure throughout five seasons in the Scottish First Division, netting 34 goals in 62 games and collecting six young player of the month honours. His clinical finishing, including a memorable 30-yard free kick against Rangers, eventually attracted interest from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers, who signed him for an estimated £150,000 in January 2011.
While at Wolves, Griffiths experienced the highs of individual accolades and the lows of disciplinary scrutiny. While on loan at Hibernian during 2011–12, he secured the SFWA Footballer of the Year title and gained his initial Scotland cap. However, his time was also marked by tension; he faced suspensions for gesturing at supporters and was involved in a legal matter regarding offensive comments made in an Edinburgh pub. Subsequent investigations by Police Scotland and the SFA resulted in a 2015 caution via the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.
Griffiths' career reached a peak at Celtic, where he joined in January 2014 for a reported £1 million fee. He became a vital attacking force, notably scoring a hat-trick against Inverness and contributing to a 2015 League Cup victory. His ability to find the net was remarkable, including a brace in the Champions League playoffs against Malmö FF in August 2015. After various stints, including a loan back to Dundee in the 2021–22 season, he transitioned from the Scottish top flight to clubs like Falkirk and eventually Western Australia's Mandurah City in August 2022.
