In short: In 2011, Leigh-Anne Pinnock failed her initial bootcamp challenge on The X Factor. Instead of ending her career, the setback led to the formation of Little Mix, a group that would rewrite the rules for girl groups and eventually pave the way for Pinnock's historic solo success.

Pinnock’s journey to stardom began with a setback. After her first solo audition of Rihanna’s "Only Girl (In the World)" failed to secure a spot, she was placed in a trio called Orion with Jade Thirlwall. Though that group was eliminated, the judges eventually reunited the members to form Rhythmix, which became Little Mix. By December 11, 2011, they had become the first and only girl group to win the series.

As a member of Little Mix, Pinnock helped achieve unprecedented commercial success, including 19 top-ten singles and five UK number-one hits. The group was a powerhouse, becoming the first girl group to spend 100 weeks in the UK Top 10 and the first to secure six consecutive top-five albums. However, the experience was not without personal complexity; Pinnock has spoken candidly about feeling 'invisible' as the only Black girl in the group, noting the pressure to work significantly harder to prove her place.

Since the group entered hiatus in 2022, Pinnock has transitioned into a formidable solo artist and advocate. After releasing singles like "Don't Say Love" in 2023, she reached a new milestone in February 2026 with her debut album, My Ego Told Me To. The record peaked at number three on the UK and Scottish charts, making her the first Black British woman from a girl group to reach the top three of the solo UK album rankings.

Beyond music, Pinnock has used her platform to address systemic issues. Through her 2021 documentary, Leigh-Anne: Race, Pop & Power, and her charity, The Black Fund, she has campaigned for racial equality and support for Black communities. Her multifaceted career has earned her accolades ranging from the Glamour Awards to an honorary doctorate from Buckinghamshire New University in July 2023.
