From Nashville receptionist to Grammy-winning duet partner
In short: Before she was a mainstay on the country charts, Linda Davis was working as a studio receptionist in Tennessee. Her journey from singing local radio jingles to sharing a number one hit with Reba McEntire is a masterclass in persistence and the power of unexpected collaborations.
Born in Dodson, Texas, in 1962, Linda Davis began her musical journey at just six years old on a local radio program. By age 20, she had relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where she initially found success as part of the duo Skip & Linda. After a period of performing in hotel piano bars and working as a studio receptionist, she eventually secured a solo recording career with major labels like Liberty and Arista Nashville. Her early professional years included signing to MDJ Records with Skip Eaton, and she was eventually discovered by producer Bob Montgomery while performing in a Sheraton hotel piano bar.
The pinnacle of Davis's career arrived in 1993 with the release of 'Does He Love You.' This duet with Reba McEntire reached number one on the Billboard country charts and earned both artists a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Collaboration. While she achieved significant solo success, such as her 1996 hit 'Some Things Are Meant to Be' which reached number 13, much of her later work became a family affair. Beyond this landmark duet, her solo discography includes albums such as I'm Yours, released in 1998 on DreamWorks Records, and her 1996 project, Some Things Are Meant to Be.
In recent decades, Davis's musical legacy has intertwined with her family. Alongside her husband, Lang Scott, and daughter, Hillary Scott—of the group Lady A—she has released several self-released albums, including a 2003 Christmas record. Her achievements also include Grammy awards for collaborating with the Scott Family in Christian music, alongside her 2009 induction into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. Her accolades also include a Billboard Music Award in 2017 for the song 'Thy Will.' Additionally, she has earned Grammy wins for her work on the album Love Remains.
