The Gibraltar club that stunned Celtic and conquered the continent
In short: How does a tiny nation's football club reach Europe's biggest stages? Lincoln Red Imps didn't just participate; they broke records, secured historic firsts for their country, and pulled off one of the most shocking upsets in modern European football history.
Founded in 1976 by Charles Polson, Lincoln Red Imps began as a youth team composed of players from the 'Blue Batons' police youth team. The club took its name from England's Lincoln City FC—specifically their 'Imps' nickname—and received its red branding through sponsorship from Reg Brealey, a Sheffield United chairman and local resident.
The club's rise was meteoric. After joining the GFA second division, they secured promotion to the first division in just one season (1981–82) before winning the Gibraltar Premier Division in 1983–84. They dominated the domestic scene with 29 league titles, including a staggering 14 consecutive championships between 2003 and 2016—a run that surpassed Glacis United's previous record of nine.
Lincoln's international impact began in 2014 when they became the first Gibraltarian team to enter the UEFA Champions League qualifying stage. They continued this trailblazing path by reaching the second round of qualification and eventually becoming the first club from Gibraltar to reach a European group stage in August 2021 after defeating Riga FC.
One of their most storied moments occurred in 2016, when they pulled off a 1–0 home victory against Scottish Premiership champions Celtic. It was Brendan Rodgers' first competitive match as Celtic manager and remains one of the club's most famous results. Today, the club continues to expand its legacy, currently renovating Victoria Stadium into an 8,000-seat football-specific venue.
