The Dutch rapper who broke Spotify records and faced public reckoning
In short: Jorik Scholten, known as Lil' Kleine, achieved unprecedented commercial success in the Netherlands, becoming a household name through record-breaking streams. However, his meteoric rise was shadowed by personal controversies that eventually led to his music being pulled from major platforms and a public apology for domestic abuse.
Born in Amsterdam in 1994, Scholten's path to stardom began with early health struggles, including leukemia surgery at age one. He entered the entertainment industry as a child actor before transitioning into music. By 2013, he signed with TopNotch and collaborated with Ronnie Flex on "Drank & Drugs," a double-platinum single that solidified his place in the Dutch hip-hop scene.
His debut album, Wop!, released in February 2016, shattered records by becoming the most-streamed new album in Dutch Spotify history within 24 hours—surpassing Justin Bieber's Purpose. It was also the first rap album in the Netherlands to have every track rank in the top 35 of the Single Top 100 simultaneously. By May 2017, his second album Alleen achieved another milestone: it was the first time an individual Dutch artist reached 1.84 million Spotify listeners in a single month.
Despite these achievements, Scholten's career became defined by legal and personal turmoil starting in 2021. Following an arrest in Ibiza on suspicion of domestic violence against his fiancée Jaimie Vaes, he faced significant backlash. This led to Sony Music severing ties, FunX stopping his broadcasts, and Madame Tussauds removing his wax figure. In early 2024, Scholten appeared on the show Renze to publicly apologize for the abuse he committed, marking a somber conclusion to a polarizing career.
His story serves as a complex study of how rapid cultural influence can be both built and dismantled by personal conduct. While his technical success in streaming and chart-topping remains a historical fact for Dutch music, it stands in stark contrast to the domestic violence allegations that eventually reshaped his public identity.
