In a world of absolute truth, nobody is ever truly right.
In short: The characters of Jujutsu Kaisen aren't just heroes and villains; they are studies in individual ethics. Author Gege Akutami designed them to operate in a grey moral landscape where the distinction between 'good' and 'bad' dissolves into personal conviction and the weight of tragedy.
Gege Akutami’s creative philosophy for Jujutsu Kaisen centers on the absence of absolute truth. Rather than following a binary moral compass, characters act according to their own internal ethics. This is reflected in the design of antagonistic figures like Sukuna and Mahito. Akutami intentionally avoided the trope of 'deep down they are good,' instead crafting them as intrinsically evil beings who enjoy causing human suffering. However, the narrative suggests that because no one is objectively right, no one is objectively wrong, forcing the reader to empathize with even the most destructive actors.
The construction of these characters often stems from personal history and external influences. Yuji Itadori, the series' protagonist, was largely inspired by Akutami's older brother, who succeeded in both sports and academics—the opposite of the author's own path. Conversely, the character of Megumi Fushiguro was developed through a process of trial and error; Akutami noted that Megumi's personality only truly crystallized once he began speaking lines in the manuscript. This organic development led to Megumi unintentionally sharing similarities with Osamu Mikumo from World Trigger.
The cast also serves as a vehicle for exploring different types of power and sacrifice. For instance, Maki Zen'in represents a life defined by 'Heavenly Restriction,' where a lack of Cursed Energy resulted in superhuman physical abilities. In contrast, Toge Inumaki’s 'Cursed Speech' requires him to limit his own speech to rice ball ingredients to prevent his voice from becoming a weapon. These diverse mechanics ensure that every character's struggle is tied to a specific, unique cost to their humanity or autonomy.
