The Glasgow duopoly that defined a century of Scottish football
In short: For over forty years, the pinnacle of Scottish football has belonged to just two clubs. While many leagues see diverse champions, Scotland's top flight has been almost entirely dominated by Celtic and Rangers, creating one of the most concentrated power structures in global sports.
The landscape of Scottish football began in 1890 with the establishment of the Scottish Football League (SFL). In its inaugural season, a unique rule required a play-off match for teams tied on points. This resulted in Dumbarton and Rangers sharing the first-ever championship after a 2–2 draw—the only time in history the title was split between two clubs.
Since then, the league has undergone several structural shifts, including the move to professionalism in 1893, a three-tier reorganization in 1975, and the formation of the Scottish Premier League (SPL) in 1998. Despite these changes, the dominance of the Glasgow rivals known as the 'Old Firm' has remained constant. As of 2026, Celtic leads with 56 titles to Rangers' 55, while no other club has managed more than four.
The current era of Old Firm supremacy is a record-breaking streak; neither club outside this duo has won the title since Aberdeen's victory in 1984–85 under Alex Ferguson. This 41-year period of dominance surpasses the previous longest streak of 27 years (1904–1931). The rivalry is further cemented by 'doubles' and 'trebles,' with Celtic achieving a historic quadruple in the 1966–67 season by winning all domestic trophies plus the European Cup.
This concentration of power means that for most of the last century, success in Scottish football has been synonymous with one of these two institutions. The only other club to achieve a league and Scottish Cup double outside of the Old Firm did so during the 1983–84 season.
