The invisible specialist whose precision determines the outcome of professional football
In short: In the high-stakes world of the NFL, most players chase glory, but the long snapper chases perfection. Measuring success in fractions of a second, this specialist performs a high-pressure task where a single error can cost a championship.
The role of the long snapper is defined by extreme precision and high stakes. During punts, the snapper must deliver the ball 1-to-15 yards to the punter, while field goal and conversion attempts require a snap of 7 to 8 yards. A successful punt snap must reach the target—the punter's waist or abdomen—within a window of 0.65 to 0.75 seconds with a tight spiral. Any deviation, known as a 'bad snap,' can lead to blocked kicks, aborted plays, or catastrophic field position shifts.
Historically, this was not a dedicated position. Teams typically used backup centers or linemen who were not receiving playing time. However, a shift toward specialization began in 1971 with George Allen of the Washington Redskins, who utilized George Burman as a modern specialist. Today, nearly every NFL team employs a dedicated long snapper. This evolution has even led to a rise in youth training, as families recognize that the position offers high job security and an average career length of 7.5 years—more than double that of any other position.
The physical toll of the role is significant. In college, rules protect snappers from contact until one second after the snap, but the NFL provides less protection, though defenders cannot line up directly in front of them in kick formations. The consequences of failure are well-documented: in 2003, a botched snap by Trey Junkin cost the New York Giants a playoff game, and in 2022, a high snap during an extra point forced the Cincinnati Bengals into overtime, where they eventually lost to the Steelers.
