In short: Born in 1977 as the Hemel Hempstead Lakers, this professional basketball franchise has navigated decades of relocations, rebranding, and financial instability. After moving through Watford and Milton Keynes, the club finally landed in London’s Copper Box Arena, eventually becoming the first British team to reach the EuroCup semi-finals.

After early success in the National Basketball League, the team faced years of mid-table struggles and frequent rebrandings, including a stint as the Hemel Royals. By the late 1990s, the club sought a fresh start, relocating to Milton Keynes in 1998. This era brought the team's first major silverware, the BBL Cup, in 2008, under the leadership of long-time owner and coach Vince Macaulay-Razaq.

Despite these successes, the Milton Keynes years were defined by a persistent search for a permanent home. Plans for a new arena were repeatedly delayed, leading to a nomadic existence that saw the team play in various temporary venues. By 2012, with the London Olympic legacy providing new opportunities, the club moved to the Copper Box Arena in Stratford and rebranded as the London Lions. This transition marked a significant shift in ambition, as the club became the capital's only professional basketball team.

The club's modern history has been marked by both high-level competition and severe financial fragility. In 2020, 777 Partners acquired the team, ending Macaulay's 27-year tenure. Under new ownership, the Lions achieved historic milestones, including their 2023–24 EuroCup semi-final appearance. However, the club faced a near-collapse at the end of that season due to financial fraud allegations surrounding their owners. In August 2024, the Lithuanian tech company Tesonet, which holds shares in BC Žalgiris, rescued the franchise, ensuring its survival for the 2024–25 season.
