In short: In a professional league defined by physical attrition, London Fletcher achieved the impossible. He played 256 consecutive games and started 215 of them, setting an NFL record for linebackers. From an undrafted free agent to a Hall of Fame inductee, his career is a masterclass in durability and relentless consistency.

London Fletcher’s journey began as an undrafted free agent. After running a 4.38 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, he signed a one-year, $158,000 contract with the St. Louis Rams on April 28, 1998. While he was expected to be a day 2 selection, he slipped through the draft entirely, yet he would go on to win Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams in 1999.

His durability is statistically unprecedented. Only five NFL players have ever competed in more than 250 straight games, including Fletcher. He holds the all-time record for most consecutive starts at the linebacker position, finishing his career with 215 consecutive starts—a mark that ties him for seventh all-time with players like Alan Page and Ronde Barber.

Fletcher's impact spanned multiple franchises and eras. He spent four seasons with the Rams, five with the Buffalo Bills, and his final seven seasons with the Washington Redskins. His versatility allowed him to transition from a middle linebacker to a left inside linebacker when Washington moved to a 3–4 defensive scheme in 2010. By the time he retired on December 18, 2013, he had become the first player from John Carroll University to enter the College Football Hall of Fame.

Beyond the statistics, Fletcher was a decorated leader. He earned four Pro Bowl selections and was a defensive co-captain for Washington from 2008 until his retirement. His legacy is cemented in the Washington Commanders Ring of Fame, where he was inducted in 2019.
