In short: Was King Arthur a real man or a mythic construction? While mainstream historians dismiss the link, a 2nd-century Roman commander named Lucius Artorius Castus remains at the center of a fascinating debate. His career spanned from the deserts of Syria to the frontiers of Britain, leaving behind a trail of complex inscriptions.

Lucius Artorius Castus was a high-ranking Roman military officer whose career flourished between the mid-2nd and early 3rd centuries AD. While his origins are debated—with theories suggesting Celtic, Greek, or even Etruscan roots—he was born in Italy, specifically the Neapolitan hinterland. His name, Artorius, is likely a Latinized form of a Celtic patronym, a theory supported by the frequency of the prefix *Arto- in Northern Italy's Gaulish-speaking regions.

Castus held several prestigious titles, including centurion of the Legio III Gallica (stationed in Syria) and Primus Pilus of the Legio V Macedonica in Dacia. He also served as the Praepositus of the Misenum fleet in Italy. His most senior role was Praefectus Legionis of the Legio VI Victrix in Britain. In this capacity, he likely managed logistics, supplies, and fortress maintenance at the headquarters in York, rather than leading frontline charges, as the role was typically held by men aged 50–60.

The most controversial aspect of his biography is his role as Dux Legionum, a temporary command over multiple troop units. One inscription suggests he led an expedition against the 'Armoricans' (Armorica/Gaul), while a 1850 reading suggests 'Armenios' (Armenians). Despite these discrepancies, the connection to Arthurian legend persists. While historians argue he lived too early to face the 5th-century Saxon invasions, some believe the family name Artorius eventually evolved into the name Arthur, preserving a kernel of historical memory in local tales.

Today, the 'real' King Arthur remains unproven. Evidence regarding Castus's existence derives from a memorial plaque and sarcophagus pieces discovered within Podstrana, Croatia. While his career was one of administrative and military leadership in the Roman Empire, his legacy continues to fuel modern fiction, from 2004 films to Japanese manga, where he is often cast as the foundational figure of the Arthurian myth.
