In short: Ryan Matterson’s journey through professional rugby league is a study in versatility and physical toll. From winning Grand Finals with the Sydney Roosters to navigating bitter contract disputes and recurring head injuries, his career highlights both the peak of Australian sport and its grueling physical demands.

Born in Greenacre, New South Wales, Ryan Matterson developed into a versatile forward who could play almost every position except fullback and wing. His early career was marked by rapid progression through the Parramatta Eels' junior systems, where he captained their NYC team in 2014 before signing with the Sydney Roosters. He made his NRL debut for the Roosters in 2016, eventually helping the club secure a victory in the 2018 NRL Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm.

Matterson’s career was often defined by complex transitions and high-stakes moments. After leaving the Roosters, he joined the Wests Tigers in 2019 but departed under 'bitter circumstances' in late 2020, leading to a public apology where he clarified that his move back to the Eels was not motivated by money. His return to Parramatta saw him play pivotal roles, including scoring the winning try in a golden point victory over Penrith in 2023 and another crucial winning try against Penrith in 2022.

However, the physical nature of his role came with significant consequences. Matterson faced multiple instances of concussion during his tenure at Parramatta, notably in 2020 when he was knocked out by an elbow to the head. These ongoing symptoms eventually led to his retirement from the NRL in August 2026. Demonstrating a dedication to principles, he opted for a three-game ban following a crusher tackle during 2022 instead of settling a $4,000 penalty, expressing annoyance regarding current sporting disciplinary measures.
