How a Manchester DJ built a multi-platinum dance empire
In short: In 1990, Mike Pickering formed M People with a simple idea: a rotating roster of singers. Instead, he discovered Heather Small, whose distinctive vocals helped the group sell over 11 million records and become one of the 1990s' most consistent hit-makers.
The group's origins are rooted in the Manchester club scene. Founder Mike Pickering, a former member of Quando Quango and a DJ at the legendary Haçienda, teamed up with Paul Heard to transition from the underground to the mainstream. While the original vision involved using different vocalists for various tracks, the discovery of Heather Small—previously of the soul band Hot House—solidified the band's signature sound. The band's percussionist, Shovell, had previously performed with the collective Natural Life. Additionally, Paul Heard brought experience from the acid jazz group Ace of Clubs.
Their ascent was rapid. Following their 1992 debut album, Northern Soul, the band achieved massive success with Elegant Slumming. This second album reached number 2 in the UK and earned them the Mercury Music Prize. The mid-90s saw them dominate the charts with hits like 'Moving On Up' and 'Don't Look Any Further,' and they secured consecutive BRIT Awards for Best British Dance Act in 1994 and 1995. Their hit 'Renaissance' even served as the theme for the BBC 2 programme The Living Soap. Furthermore, the single 'Search for the Hero' gained fame through a Peugeot 406 television advertisement.
M People's influence extended globally, particularly in the United States, where they achieved five Top 5 hits on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, including four number-one singles. By the time they released their compilation The Best of M People in 1998—which sold 1.75 million copies—they had established themselves as a powerhouse of dance-pop. Despite a long break, their impact persists; Billboard placed them at number 83 among the greatest dance groups in 2016. In the US, they secured four number-one singles on the club play charts. Their final single, 'Dreaming', was released in early 1999.
