The 'Genuine Psychopath' of the Real Madrid defense
In short: In elite football circles, Míchel Salgado earned the nickname Il Due for his aggressive style. Known for combative tackling and extreme intensity, he was famously described by a former teammate as a genuine psychopath during training sessions while helping Real Madrid secure major trophies over several years.
Salgado's reputation for intensity was so pronounced that former teammate Steve McManaman famously described him as 'the hardest person in the world,' even labeling him a 'genuine psychopath' during training sessions. This uncompromising physicality made him a staple of the Real Madrid defense for seven years, where he helped secure the UEFA Champions League title in 1999–2000 and contributed to the club's 30th national title.
His career was marked by high-impact moments and significant physical tolls. In February 1998, a dangerous challenge by Salgado sidelined Brazilian star Juninho Paulista for six months, causing him to miss that year's FIFA World Cup. Despite his reputation for aggression, Salgado was a versatile asset who also contributed offensively, scoring seven goals in 343 La Liga matches and helping Celta de Vigo qualify for the UEFA Cup during the 1998–99 campaign.
After being sidelined by the emergence of Sergio Ramos in 2006–07, Salgado moved to England's Blackburn Rovers in 2009. His career remained unconventional even after retirement; he returned to the pitch at age 40 for India's Premier Futsal and again in 2018 to play in Panama. Today, his influence persists through coaching roles, including serving as an assistant manager for Egypt and head coach of Saudi Arabia's under-15 national team.
Beyond the pitch, Salgado remains deeply embedded in footballing circles, marrying into a prominent sporting family and holding directorial positions in clubs across Cyprus and India.
