From student assistant to WNBA head coach: the ascent of Lynne Roberts
In short: Before leading the Los Angeles Sparks, Lynne Roberts was a student assistant helping her college team to five straight NCAA appearances. Her journey from a history graduate to a premier professional coach is defined by record-breaking shooting and a reputation for building winning programs across multiple universities.
Lynne Roberts' basketball journey began in earnest at Seattle Pacific University, where she played for the Falcons from 1993 to 1997. During her collegiate career, she established herself as a prolific shooter, setting a school record by making 82 three-pointers in a single season. One of her most celebrated moments occurred when she hit game-winning three-pointers to defeat the Division I UC Davis Aggies.
After earning a bachelor's degree in history in 1997, Roberts stayed at Seattle Pacific to earn a master's degree in athletic administration, which she completed in 2000. During this period, she served as a student assistant, contributing to a highly successful era for the Falcons that included an impressive 113–31 record and five consecutive NCAA Division 2 appearances.
Roberts' coaching career is marked by significant milestones at several institutions. At Chico State, she coached from 2002 to 2006, securing the school's first CCAA title in 2005 and leading the Wildcats to the D2 Final Four in 2006. At the University of the Pacific, she led the 'Cardiac Kids' to a record 27 wins in 2013 and was named a WCC co-coach of the year in 2015.
Her success continued at the University of Utah, where she secured the program's first winning season since 2012–13. This trajectory eventually led to her appointment as the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks on November 19, 2024.
Her tenure with the Sparks concluded on September 25, 2026.
