How a forgotten Balkan front became the decisive turning point of World War I
In short: Often dismissed as a stagnant sideshow, the Macedonian front was far more than a collection of bored soldiers in the Gardeners of Salonika. It was a complex geopolitical trap that ultimately shattered the Central Powers, forcing the collapse of Bulgaria and triggering a domino effect that ended the Great War.
Formed in 1915 to aid Serbia against a triple invasion by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria, the Macedonian front initially failed to prevent Serbia's collapse. The Allied expedition arrived too late, hampered by the Western Front's demands and Greece's internal National Schism. While French and British forces retreated to Thessaloniki, they established a fortified base that would serve as a strategic thorn in the side of the Central Powers for three years.
The front was a microcosm of the war's broader tensions. While French soldiers engaged in a mission civilisatrice, attempting to modernize local agriculture and combat malaria, British troops often maintained a live-and-let-live attitude toward their Bulgarian counterparts. Yet, beneath this surface, the Allies were building a massive, multinational force. By 1918, the army included French, Serbian, British, Italian, Greek, and Russian units, alongside re-armed Czech and Slovak prisoners of war.
The breakthrough finally arrived in September 1918. Following the Battle of Dobro Pole, the Allied offensive shattered Bulgarian lines. Facing a domestic uprising and military collapse, Bulgaria signed the Armistice of Salonica on 29 September 1918. This defeat was catastrophic for the Central Powers; it opened the path to Constantinople and forced the Ottoman Empire to seek an armistice by 26 October. As German Emperor Wilhelm II famously lamented, the Serbian-led victory had rendered the German military situation hopeless, precipitating the final collapse of the alliance.
