In short: In late 1948, the Chinese Communist Party launched a decisive military operation to seize control of Manchuria. Over 52 days, the People's Liberation Army dismantled Nationalist defenses, capturing key industrial hubs and securing a strategic edge that fundamentally altered the trajectory of the conflict between the two rival factions.

The Liaoshen campaign, occurring between September and November 1948, targeted the highly industrialized region of Northeast China. Following the Soviet withdrawal in March 1946, both the Nationalist government and the Communist forces vied for control. By 1948, the Communist Northeast Field Army, led by Lin Biao and commissar Luo Ronghuan, had effectively isolated Nationalist garrisons in Shenyang, Changchun, and Jinzhou by severing land supply lines along the Jingha Railway.

Internal discord plagued the Nationalist response. Chiang Kai-shek and his regional commander, Wei Lihuang, disagreed sharply on strategy. While Wei favored holding the major cities, Chiang demanded a concentration of forces at Jinzhou to block Communist access to the North China Plain. This indecision proved fatal. After Mao Zedong successfully pressured Lin Biao to commit to an assault on Jinzhou, the city fell in mid-October, resulting in the capture of 80,000 Nationalist troops. Simultaneously, the long-besieged city of Changchun collapsed after local units defected.

The final phase saw the destruction of the Nationalist Ninth Army Group near Heishan and the subsequent fall of Shenyang on November 1, 1948. The loss of Manchuria was a catastrophic blow for Chiang, who had deployed his elite troops from the Chinese Expeditionary Force to the region. By the end of the campaign, the Communist forces held the entire Northeast, leaving Nationalist positions in Beiping and Tianjin vulnerable. This victory provided the Communists with a superior operational capacity, marking the first time in the civil war they held such a significant advantage over their opponents.
