A viral mobile game turns magical girl dreams into a deadly, high-stakes survival competition.
In short: In the world of Magical Girl Raising Project, a popular social network game offers a one-in-ten-thousand chance to become a real-life magical girl. But the dream quickly turns into a nightmare when administrators force the girls into a brutal, life-or-death battle to eliminate half of their number.
Created by author Asari Endō and illustrator Maruino, the Magical Girl Raising Project began as a light novel series in 2012. The premise centers on a mobile game where players earn Magical Candies by performing good deeds and protecting citizens. However, the narrative takes a dark turn when the game's administration decides that sixteen magical girls in a single city are excessive. To reduce the population, they implement a ruthless rule: the girl with the fewest candies each week loses her powers, a policy that spirals into a violent, competitive struggle for survival.
The franchise expanded significantly beyond its literary origins. A manga adaptation by Pochi Edoya ran in Comp Ace from 2014 to 2015, followed by various spin-offs and sequels, including the Restart light novel series. In 2016, the studio Lerche produced an anime adaptation directed by Hiroyuki Hashimoto. The series garnered attention for its stark contrast between cutesy character aesthetics and the grim, bloody nature of the competition. Critics noted its clear influences from other dark magical girl subversions, with some reviewers praising the complex, flawed motivations of the ensemble cast while others critiqued its pacing and tonal shifts.
The series has maintained a consistent presence in Japanese media for over a decade. By April 2022, seventeen volumes of the original light novel had been published. The anime adaptation, which initially aired in late 2016, was followed years later by a second season based on the Restart novels, which premiered in October 2026 under the direction of SynergySP. Despite the polarizing nature of its violent themes, the franchise remains a notable example of the genre's shift toward darker, more cynical storytelling, blending traditional magical girl tropes with the high-pressure mechanics of modern social gaming.
